Seven Craven Beach Reopened

Update August 12:

The Seven Craven Beach has tested negative for high bacteria levels and the beach has reopened.

August 10

Hi folks,

We learned today that the beach off Craven and Bay Ridge Roads has tested positive for high bacteria levels.  The Department of Environmental Quality’s web site has full details.  The DEQ recommends that this beach remain closed until tests come back negative.  This advisory does NOT apply to the entire lake.

As the link above indicates, this is most likely due to wildlife in the area, not storm water runoff or septic issues.  The link erroneously refers to Axford Acres.  Note that the Axford Acres beach off Ramada was tested and results were negative for high bacteria levels.

  1. For all the bitching about Bob Jones, I don’t see any real difference in the lake level, duck/geese reduction, fish stocking, etc. . Sorry but . The results appear to be the same as when Bob ran the lake as a dictator. Tell me what has improved?. Other than the involvement of more residents which I think is great nothing has changed..

    • You’re right, Hank. We don’t have any more influence over mother nature than Bob and we can’t do much more to make the governing bodies we’re beholden to work harder. Building new relationships takes time. However, I believe that communication and access to information is better than ever, and a CONSIDERABLE amount of time and effort has gone in to recreating that last several years of financial reports, so residents not only see where their money has gone but can make informed decisions about where it should go in the future – hopefully so they decide to continue to contribute so we can all benefit. I also agree there’s something to be said about making it easier for more people to get involved. There will be a new election in October, and you’re welcome to run and/or to vote for whomever you would like to see in this position. I should remind you that we are all volunteers who spend an incredible amount of personal time (and in some cases, money) providing this community service. If you would like to volunteer you time, money, or knowledge in pursuit of a solution for the issues which you’d like to see resolved that is absolutely welcome!

    • Hank – Sorry you feel that way, but I would like to make a few points.

1:) What are you doing to help? As far as I know you are not a Trustee and do not attend our meetings.

2.) Not everything we do is seen. A number of the board members are busy answering question, trying to find what our financial status is, improving our Slow No Wake buoys. Working with other member to improve our bylaws, working with the weed guys, looking into improving our muck issue. Making sure everything we know is put on this web page.

3.) Not sure why more involvement is not change.

4.) Lake Level is not in our control period. If you came to a meeting you would know that. All we can do is call and ask questions.

5.) We did do a goose round up. In fact, Bob Jones did it. So if you have an issue you might want to talk to him.

6.) Fish stocking was done last fall again prior to the new board. The cost is not cheep and in order to make it worth doing it has been done every couple of years.

7.) We as a board are always looking for people to help and all of us do things so one of us is not always doing it. One this gives accountability, two it allows for more than one person to know how something works which helps when some is unable to do something.

8.) IF YOU DON”T LIKE IT CHANGE IT. In October we will have our elections again. I recommend you tell everyone so they can step up to the plate and do it better. We did not even get a full year in the position and you want to complain. At least we on the board and the trustees stepped up to the plate and are trying to change our lake for the better.

My final thought to you is if you are not going to help SIT DOWN and SHUT UP, because things are starting to move forward and will continue whether you are on board or not.
