  1. As a follow up to my comments regarding the current crop of weeds encountered during a kayak trip around our lake I want to add the following observations.

    1. In the murky water of the Duck Lake Zoo area current crop of weed infestation not apparent.
    2. The massive Carp, which love to eat milfoil aquatic plants, appear to be thriving and are attracting a great deal of attention.
    3. Seems like we are in a “ Catch 22 “ between treating for muck and water clarity via aeration and treating for the current massive weed beds via chemicals. With climate warming and reduced winter ice cover we may need to modify/ tweak our water quality plan.
    4. I am not an expert in marine biology, but it might be prudent to identify exactly what variety of weeds we are dealing with. Comparing what I pulled out out of the water to pictures I saw on the Internet, the weeds looked a lot like some type of Milfoil which are nasty to deal with.
    • Hey Jeff, we would love for you to come to the next meeting to discuss it. So much better in person than trying to type out everything. We usually meet on the third Wednesday of most months. Thanks for the insight, though!

  2. curious,…can anyone put up a swim floating platform up? What qualifys if not?

  3. I was kayaking today and encountered what seemed to be acres of the dense weed beds described in previous comments. Hard to paddle through and I can’t imagine getting through in a powerboat without the prop getting bound up. Would be good to get an expert out to identify what we are dealing with and hope it isn’t a variety of milfoil spread to our lake by boats used on other lakes.

  4. Anyone know if and when weed treatment is scheduled? Was on Little Duck today and through the clear water all I saw were big bushes, matts of weeds and weeds just below the surface with at surface weeds in a few spots. Little Duck wont be very boatable by Memorial Weekend if they arent treated soon.

    • Aquaweed will be out next week for their first survey. We will then make a treatment plan and treat accordingly. Remember, some weeds are good for the habitat.

  5. Did WRS put the board back to raise the lake?

  6. Hello members this is a reminder that we will have our regularly scheduled 3rd Wednesday of the month board meeting tomorrow at the Highland Twp Activity Center, 209 N John St, Highland, MI on March 20, 2024, at 7:30 pm.

  7. Question…are water pumps/ bubblers allowed to run 24/7 under your dock?

  8. Happy New Year! Hello members! Due to a scheduling conflict, we will need to move our regularly scheduled 3rd Wednesday of month meeting. The new date is moved up and has been rescheduled to this coming Monday, January 15, 2024, at 7:30 pm at the Highland Twp Activity Center, 209 N John St, Highland. Please consider joining us for this meeting as we will be discussing the annual report of Restorative Lake Sciences as well as discussing a maintenance contract renewal with Ever Blue for the lake aeration system.

  9. Regarding the muck blaster item: I understand folks wanting to make their lake or canal frontage nice enough to swim. And if it can be done without impacting neighbors, fine. I believe many just don’t understand that muck blasters don’t make organic material disappear, it moves it around, and in many instances, it can move it a long distance, helped along by boat traffic and bubblers, especially in the canals. If you bought a home with a muck bottom, you are pretty much stuck with it unless you hire a contractor and get permits for lake bottom improvement. Not limited to dredging but laying down geotextile and blowing sand on top. Unfortunately, here, the EGLE is not your friend.

Regarding everything else, keep on top of the code enforcement folks. Write a succinct letter to code enforcement and copy the supervisor and township attorney. But, please, don’t just be a meddling “Karen”, make sure there is real harm being done.

    • EGLE was notified mid summer.
Spoke with Andy (full name in my record file)
He said muck can be removed from the lake, but only using “your hands, a rake or a shovel. Mechanical machines are not permitted, be they gas, electric or human powered”.
Andy said he’ll visit the location in one to two weeks.
Nothing. Several parties called nearly a dozen times in the past 3 months. More broken promises.
This Muck Blaster created 8 foot long, 4 foot wide, 4 to 6 foot deep trenches at the sides of this bozo neighbor’s dock and pushed all that muck to the next door neighbors’ water, creating a mound of more unneeded muck.
No Karens here. Just tax payers who know if a Highland Township board member was forced to look at 2 sheds butting up to the property line, in spite of the 10 foot set back rule, as well as the unpermitted bar blocking the lakeview, as well as the 20 foot dock blatantly within their water swim area, this never would have become a topic on this web site.
      We ALL know that.
The township has the LEGAL obligation AS WELL as the legal RESPONSIBILITY to enforce the rules they implement. LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY!!
And if not, Highland Township will be using OUR tax money to defend THEIR non action in this matter in court.
Karens complain about non trivial matters. These complaints have merit. LEGAL merit.
Us non Karens will hold the parties responsible, in a court of law.
This ought to suffice as a warning to Highland Township.
But, Ole, thank you for your input. Much appreciated. Letters will be mailed to the Township parties as you suggested also
IF this issue is not resolved in a timely fashion, the next letters the Township will receive will be written from an attorney’s office.

  10. Does anyone know anything about EGLE (Department of Environment Great Lakes & Energy) and their obligation to investigate a several year on – going issue regarding a typical self entitled, property – boundary – encroaching new neighbor using a Muck Blaster machine on his dock, to blow the muck from their beach area to the adjoining neighbors, 24/7, throughout the ice free period?
These neighbors moved in approximately 6 years ago and brought their sense of entitlement and sense of victimhood with them, which they displayed shortly after moving in. Examples are: one of their dogs went into the neighbor’s yard and bit the homeowner as he was doing yardwork. Upon that neighbor informing the dog owner of the incident, the dog owner accused the homeowner of being on HIS property and threatened to “kick his a**” if he ever came on his property again. Unfortunately, the dog bite victim did not call the police at that point, which is what most of us would have done if a neighbor was so cocky and arrogant and not concerned about the dog bite situation.
Highland Township Code Enforcement was notified a dozen times about 2 sheds which are on the fence line, ignoring the 10 foot set back, as well as an unpermitted permanent bar structure newly erected at the beach area, as well as a 2nd dock, which is one foot away from the neighbor’s property line at the seawall, but because of the curvature of the beachfront, due to it being in a bay, this illegal dock crosses into the neighbor’s property within 2 feet of leaving the seawall, and extends 10 feet.
The township notified him about: There shall only be allowed 1 dock and it must be at least 10 feet from the property boundaries.
The township was notified several times about these many infractions, and this bozo is defying their authority.
Does not the Township have legal authority to enforce the Codes and Rules they have in place? Or are they all bark and no bite? Like EGLE?
I do understand lawsuits are in the formation stages.
