  1. Tues eve as I was boating I saw a “Vote yes for the library” banner hanging on the Chevron bridge. I do not think it is appropriate or want political garbage on my lake unless it pertains to the lake. I am not sure if it is even legal to hang it on the bridge but if it is there next time I go by I will rip it down and use it in my bonfire.

    • Danny,
I am surprised you would object to a banner supporting the library in your community. It is NOT a political sign. The banner is there to remind people to vote in the primary election August 7th and to support one of Highland’s greatest assets…..the library. To expand your knowledge of what the library offers you and the entire community, please go to the website voteyeslibrary.com

  2. Update on the lake level/well: Today (7-16-18) Duck Lake was 2” below the summer legal level. Dry and hot July weather is, of course, dropping our lake level. Today the well contractor has resumed working on the new well. The well itself has been drilled, new 16” steel casing and well screen has been installed and the well was developed and pump-tested by July 1st. Today’s update from Peerless-Midwest indicated that we should look to the well being in operation by the end of next week (July 27) barring any complications. Remaining work to be done includes demolishing the old pump support foundation and creating a new one at the new location, installing the previous (three years old) pump and motor, constructing the new discharge piping that will outlet at the old splash block, installing the electrical controls and wiring, installing fencing and site cleanup.

The previous well driller (1966) designed the well to draw from two confined aquifers, a shallow one at a depth from 65-90 feet using a 12” well screen, and a deep one from 136-177 feet using an 8” well screen. The new well contractor drilled a 24” hole about 10 feet east of the old well. While he found gravel at the deeper location, it was his opinion that there is too much clay in that gravel to produce any significant amount of water, other indications during the drilling process supported that conclusion. They felt that the old well obtained most of its water from the shallower of the two aquifers. Based on their recommendation, it was decided that attempting to obtain water from the lower aquifer should be abandoned and to concentrate on just the upper aquifer. To that end they installed a 16” diameter steel casing and 16” diameter stainless steel screen to draw water from just the shallow aquifer. The annular space between the wall of the 24” hole and the 16” screen is filled with special silica gravel, the balance of the space adjacent to the casing is filled with neat cement. The upside is that we will get a credit for the unused casing and screen. At our request, the driller did drill all the way to bedrock shale and determined there were no deeper aquifers that could be used.

Once the driller and all subcontractors (sitework, tree removal, traffic control) are done, WRC will prepare a final project cost and apportionment to all properties in the assessment district. Keep in mind that the lake level (well) assessment is separate from the lake improvement (weed) assessment. A few weeks ago the cost was estimated to be approximately $150,000.

  3. Found ski Saturday evening near the narrows. It is not the one that was posted earlier with the red fin.

  4. Paint your contact info on it should you get it back. Good luck.

  5. Looking for a blue and red HO Blast water ski lost along the eastern shore of Middle Duck on Tuesday evening, July 10th, around 8:00 PM. Drove up and down the shore at least five times and looked all over Middle Duck. It was a calm evening with little boat traffic. Red fin on the ski bottom would have been easily visible if the ski was upside down in the water. Assuming someone picked it up thinking it fell off a boat. Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

  6. Who is misssing floating dock with blue barrels underneath? Located west of Chevron bridge, near north side with the lily pads.

  7. Ryan,
Thanks for the detailed explanation. You, along with the core committee deserve a shout out and thank you!

  8. What is the status of lake aeration? Havn’t seen any sign of anything, , electrical or installation. Does it have to be installed in order or can they start installing lines while waiting for electrical to be put in? Thanks.

    • Hi Danny,

The Lake Aeration project was “officially” completed on June 20th. This was the date that we signed all contracts, as well as had collected all of the funds needed to get the project started ASAP. All of the equipment has officially been ordered as of June 21st. We have 2 compressors ready to go, and a third one at the shop getting retrofitted for our lake project. The other four should be coming right behind. We should start seeing compressor locations work start as soon as next week. We will be able to place all of the compressors and the conduit/main air line. However, DTE stated that they MUST run the power line from the pole to the meter through our conduit that we are having bored underground. All of the wires, as well as the main airline from the compressor will be ran underground to mitigate as many issues as possible and for the safety of the equipment and the public.

The airlines will start to be installed as soon as they receive the equipment. However, the tubing is a special tube that was ordered over sea’s and is being shipped in. So it will take a few weeks for Lake Savors to have the tubing on hand. Once they have that they can begin install. Our hope is to have the three large bodies of water (Little Duck, Big Duck, and Middle Duck) all operating first to try to get as much air into the water as possible before the ice cover happens. The end goal is to have ALL of the equipment in the water by the end of the season, and tested so we can flip the full system on April 1st next year. We will also see one bioaugmentation treatment this fall as well as this will really help set us up to come out of the gate fast in 2019.

I appreciate everyone’s help and patience as we worked our way through this process. We ran into a few hurdles that we could not have foreseen, but with the help of many people we were able to overcome them all. We even have plans to get our system back on track to treat the deep parts of the lake by next spring as well!

I just want to remind everyone that this program is a living plan. This is not a set it and forget it. You will see a steady presences of Lake Savor employees on our lake checking, maintain, and constantly monitoring the system and its performance. The diffuser plates that are put into the lake DO NOT need to be directly in front of your house for it to have a positive impact. The diffuser plates are there to add as much oxygen as possible into our lake to help the enzymes break down the muck. The plates will be moved around and changed as the lake begins to react to this system. There may even come a time a few years down the road where we may even start turning on and off compressors as the lake quality improves. This is the beauty of this system. This is not a one time fix. This is a permanent solution.

I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the summer, and please let me know if you have any other questions regarding this system.

      Thanks,
      Ryan

  9. Thats great news. Thank you.

  10. Didn’t see any progress since a week or two ago when they sank the well. No pump though. So what is wrong with the newly rebuilt pump? Wonder if it burnt up when the well went bad ?

    • Hi Gerard,

The pump is perfect and was taking in and inspected for any damage that could have happened when the well went bad. Everything checked out and they gave it a quick tune up. They are currently working on maximizing the water pull to get us back to the same flow we had with the old well. They had to order a special part from Florida to put in the well and that has caused the delay. We hope to have the well up and running in a week or two. I have asked Ole to provide an update when he can.
